Honister Hone
Honister Hone
Geologically the Honister Hone is a natural metamorphic slate that is mined in the picturesque Lake District, this unique geology of Ordovician period volcanic ash, fine sediments has created this hard metaphoric slate, it's high chlorite content, along with mica and quartz minerals give the stone it's unique dark green color and abrasive power.
This Slate has deep history and has been found to be extracted by Romans and in its current mining form it has been mined for over 4 centuries and still is mined today making it the last working slate mine in England.
This natural Hone with its high hardness and low friability means this stone with proper personal use could last lifetimes.
The Honister Hone is a honing stone, designed to be used as the final step in the sharpening process, turning a sharp edge into an exceptionally keen edge for knives and tools that require high levels of sharpness.
This Hone should be used with water or light mineral oil as lubricant to avoid build up of metal slurry, the whole surface should be used to avoid excessive uneven wear of the stone over time.
The Honister Hone has an approximate "grit" range of 10-12k making it one of the finest natural whetstones available.
There are two variations of the Honister Hone
"Plain" which measures 220x60x30mm which is suitable for the vast majority of users.
"Speckled" which measures 220x60x20mm which gives a slightly finer edge but is slightly slower and less smooth than the plain stone.
"PU Coating" is a polyurethane coating used to seal the label and bottom of the stone to reduce water damage and physical wear.
